The purpose of a second back beam on a weaving loom.

The purpose of the second back beam, also known as a double back beam, is to provide the perfect amount of tension when introducing multiple types of yarn for your warp.  When done correctly there will be even tension across the entire warp unless you introduce 2 different types of yarn to the equation and that is when you will need the second back beam. Elasticity will vary from yarn to yarn and can make the warping process very difficult. The second back beam will make this much easier. Say for example you are using a linen yarn and a wool yarn for your warp.  Linen has little stretch or elasticity while wool will stretch more and is springy. The second back beam will eliminate this problem. Apply the linen warp to the first beam and the wool to the second back beam. Once the warp has been applied both the front and second back beam are adjustable to obtain the perfect amount of tension on your warp. The second back beam comes in all shapes and sizes depending on which looms you have. Please feel free to call us if you have any questions 888.320.7746
